What Is Dry Cleaning?

Here at Dry Clean City of Vestavia Hills, we strive to keep you informed about your garment care. Today’s topic will give you more insight into the dry cleaning process.

Ever wonder why dry cleaning is in fact called dry cleaning? The reason is simple: The entire process doesn’t require water. Instead of the typical water and detergent solution used in regular laundry machines, dry cleaning usesĀ  solvent to clean your clothes. There are many different solvents available for dry cleaners to clean your clothes. We use Hydrocarbon, an environmentally friendly solvent that is non toxic and safe for our customers and the environment.

Today’s dry-cleaning process is pretty straightforward, and surprisingly enough, dry cleaning is also quite environmentally friendly.

The dry-cleaning process-

Most machines used in the industry today rotate garments in a perforated stainless steel basket, where solvents are pumped in and filtered out. Clothes are not immersed; instead, the machine gently pumps a small quantity of solvent into the rotating cylinder. This solvent absorbs whatever soil it can while gushing through the clothing’s fibers in a 20 minute cleaning cycle. Once the dry cleaning cycle ends, the load goes into dump mode to drain all of the solvent out of the drum and filter it prior to it being returned to the solvent tank. The load then goes into a 5 minute high speed extraction cycle to extract as much of the solvent out of the load as possible. Once the extraction cycle ends, the dry cleaning load is transferred to a dry clean claimer machine that goes through a 45 minute slow tumble cycle that gently removes the remaining solvent through an air injection solvent evaporation process involving temperatures up to 140 degrees. During the final 5 minutes of the dry clean process the claimer slowly cools the load to around 95 – 100 degrees as it continues to slowly be tumbled. Once the claimer finishes cooling the load the dry cleaning process has been completed. The clothes are then removed from the claimer and laid out and inspected for spots that require further attention for removal prior to the pressing process.
