Fabric Pilling Birmingham

Here at Dry Clean City of Vestavia Hills we post fabric care information on a regular basis to inform you about fabric care and why fabrics perform the way they do. Today’s topic is about Fabric Pilling.

Fabric pilling is the formation of fuzzy balls on the surface of your garment. These fuzzy balls make your garment look old and well worn. It is very difficult and even impossible on some fabrics to remove these fuzz balls and restore your garment to it’s original condition. Certain types of fabrics are more prone to fabric pilling than others, but it is really just a part of normal wear and tear.

Fibers on the surface of the garment tangle together to cause fuzz balls called fabric pilling. Pilling tends to be more common in garments that have longer surface fibers such as angora sweaters. In fact, most wool, wool blend, and acrylic sweaters are almost guaranteed to pill the more that they are worn. It’s the areas of the garment that are exposed to friction that will start to show signs of pilling. The most common areas are under the arms, and the sides of the garment.

To avoid fabric pilling choose garments that are smooth, sturdy, and tightly knitted or woven. Some fabrics such as spandex or denim are highly resistant to fabric pilling.

Your dry cleaner will not be able to remove these fuzz balls for you, since they are really just tangled up surface fibers that are part of your garment. These fuzz balls are not like lint that can be removed with a lint roller or fabric brush.
