Why Do Jeans Fade?

Here at Dry Clean City of Vestavia Hills, we take the time to help keep you informed about topics involving your wardrobe and household furnishings.

Today’s topic is “Why Do My Jeans Fade?”

Indigo jeans are prone to fading because the indigo dye doesn’t actually dye the fabric. Indigo dye does not dye fabrics like traditional fabric dyes do, it just kind of mixes with it, which is why it fades so easily. This is the reason that indigo dyed garments such as jeans fade and will continue to fade for the life of the garment.

You can’t lock in the color on anything dyed with an indigo dye. You can have your jeansĀ  dry cleaned or hand wash and line dry them to slow the fading process down, but you can’t prevent them from fading.

You can try the old wives tale of soaking them in clear vinegar, or hand washing them in Woolite, and that may slow the fading process down, but it still won’t prevent your jeans from fading.

We would recommend not wearing brand new jeans without having them cleaned at least once. Wearing brand new jeans is a good way to ruin a leather couch or the leather seats in your car. The indigo dye will rub off on anything it comes into contact with for a while.
