Why Do Antiperspirants Stain My Clothes?

Did you know that antiperspirants and deodorants can ruin your clothing? Most antiperspirants contain aluminum chloride, a chemical that can weaken and discolor the fibers of your clothing it comes in contact with. Many deodorants and antiperspirants also contain artificial green or blue coloring that can discolor the areas of your clothing they come in contact with.

Some signs of clothing damage are discoloration of the armpits on shirts, blouses, jackets & sweaters. Chances are that if you wear an undershirt or undergarment that you will notice discoloration on those garments first since they are directly exposed to the damaging chemicals.

Another sign that your garments are being damaged by antiperspirant or deodorant chemicals is that holes may start to appear in those areas after dry cleaning or laundering.

Our research suggests a few things you can do to keep this chemical damage minimal:

1) Make sure your skin is dry before applying an antiperspirant or deodorant.

2) Do not apply too much antiperspirant or deodorant because it will be more prone to seep into your clothing due to the product caking under your armpits.

3) After applying antiperspirant or deodorant let the product dry on your skin before putting on your clothes. If it’s still wet or moist, it will immediately start seeping into the armpit area of your garment.

4) Launder or dry clean your garments after each wearing. Regular garment cleaning helps prevent garment damaging chemicals and sweat from building up. The longer your garment is exposed to antiperspirant & deodorant chemicals or sweat before it is cleaned, the more likely your garment will sustain fabric damage such as fiber weakening or discoloration.
