Necktie Care Birmingham Alabama

Here at Dry Clean City of Vestavia Hills, we post garment care tips that may be of interest to our customers.

Most neckties are made from silk. Silk is a product of silk worms and it has a very high protein content. The silk webbing from these worms is processed and spun into silk fibers to be used as thread, or woven or knitted into fabric. In most cases the raw silk is dyed prior to being processed into thread or fabric.

Protein stains are nearly impossible to remove from silk because silk itself is also mostly a protein.  Many food spots will contain protein that will require a dry cleaner to use a protein release spotting chemical to break the stain down so it can be removed in the dry cleaning process. Silk however, is a fabric that is mostly protein so these protein release spotting chemicals cannot be used safely. The use of protein release chemicals will react with the protein in the silk and most likely result in color loss. Dry cleaners have very few options to remove food stains from silk garments and neckties.

We suggest that you lightly spray your neckties with Scotch Guard to help repel food stains from soaking into the silk. These spills can be blotted from the tie before it has time to soak in if the tie was previously treated with Scotch Guard. Also, never rub a silk tie with a wet cloth. Rubbing silk will chafe the fabric and cause irreversible damage.
