Former Parisian executive John Mattioli lives by a simple motto: “Fail to plan, and you plan to fail.”

Planning got him through 2006 after his job became a casualty of a Belk takeover. He decided to take his knowledge about clothes and customer service and use them to start a new business: the discount cleaning store Dry Clean City of Vestavia Hills.

His business has now grown to the point that he’s adding a second location called 5 Star Cleaners that opens on Dec. 3 in a 1,400-square-foot space at the Valleydale Village retail center at the intersection of Caldwell Mill Road & Valleydale Road.
