What Does Spot Clean Only Garment Label Mean?

The label in your new dress say’s “Spot Clean Only”. What does that mean?

Unfortunately many consumers do not check the garment care label when purchasing special occasion dresses or suits. Many beaded garments are not constructed to withstand the dry cleaning process and most likely will have beads come off or become loose. Clothing manufacturers are putting care labels that say “Spot Clean Only” in garments that they believe are at risk to sustain damage when dry cleaned or washed. Unfortunately, most consumers do not understand that a “Spot Clean Only” garment cannot be cleaned safely and that they have purchased a garment that can’t really be cleaned to remove perspiration, makeup, food or drink stains, dirt, etc.

As a dry cleaner, we do not Spot Clean any garments because the chemicals used to treat spots must be followed by dry cleaning  or washing afterward to be flushed out to prevent chemical or moisture rings from appearing on the area that was spot treated. The manufacturer has shifted all of the risks for caring for the garment to the dry cleaner and the consumer by labeling the garment as “Spot Clean Only”.

Our recommendation is to not purchase any garment that is labeled “Spot Clean Only” unless you plan to only wear the garment one time and dispose of it. Yes, sometimes we will dry clean or wash a “Spot Clean Only” garment if the customer agrees to not hold us liable for any damage that might be incurred. Many times we have done this with successful results, but by not following the care label, the garment may sustain damage and never be the same.
