Out of the Darkness Community Walk Birmingham 2013

The owners of Dry Clean City of Vestavia Hills have set up a drop off station at their 5 Star Cleaners location at Valleydale Village for shoe donations.

The Alabama Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will host the 8th Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Birmingham this year. Last year the Birmingham Walk ranked 6th in the nation with 1700 walkers and raising almost $160,000. This year’s walk will take place on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Heardmont Park.

Each year we display a pair of shoes along the walkway for each life that is lost to suicide in the state of Alabama. It creates a visual reality of the health crisis that we are facing in the state and country. In 2011, there were 640 suicides compared to 301 homicides in the State of Alabama. Nationally, there are also more suicides than homicides. This image particularly hit home with the youth that attended the walk. It took us several years to collect the shoes which we stored along with other supplies in a commercial storage unit. There was a fire in the neighboring unit two months ago and we lost everything.

We have begun to collect shoes for this year’s walk; I know many people would be disappointed if it was not a part of the walk. We currently have 800 following on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/AFSPALABAMA?ref=stream) and we know if we explained our situation and asked for donations we would be able to quickly gather the 640. If we collect more than that we will donate them to the Foundry.

Please visit 5 Star Cleaners and donate a pair of shoes for this worthy event.

5 Star Cleaners is located in the Valleydale Village Shopping Center next to Publix.

Out of the Darkness Walks

Walk to Save Lives

Suicide claims more than 38,000 lives each year in the United States alone, with someone dying by suicide every 13.7 minutes. A suicide attempt is made every minute of every day, resulting in nearly one million attempts made annually.

When you walk in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walks, you join efforts with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP’s vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives. The walks raise awareness about depression and suicide, and provide comfort and assistance to those who have lost someone to suicide.

SUICIDE CAN BE PREVENTED. YOU CAN HELP. JOIN THE MOVEMENT.
